Disciplined workers get there faster
I have always felt blessed to have been born into a great family. Most of my relatives were teachers or preachers. My mother is one of nine siblings, and every one of them was talented in some way.
I am the youngest of five, and I entered the world a lot later than my siblings did. (I think some people would call that a mistake… LOL) I marched to the beat of a different drummer from the beginning. I was nonconforming and rebellious, unlike my siblings. I also had a difficult time focusing. ADHD wasn’t diagnosed back then, but I’m sure I could have been a poster child for it.
In spite of all these differences, I did have one thing in common with everybody else in my family: a strong work ethic. I learned early in life that being disciplined is a key factor in achieving success.
Discipline is the ability to maintain focus and consistency in our actions, especially when our motivation goes away and we start losing interest, which happens to all of us from time to time. Disciplined workers don’t just clock in and out; they invest time in improving their skills, managing their tasks, and cultivating productive habits.
I began selling real estate in 1983 and started doing motivational speaking in 1995. In both of these careers, I attribute every bit of success I have achieved to being disciplined.
“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” — Jim Rohn
Disciplined people have the following skills in common:
- Goal Setting: They define their objectives clearly. They break their goals into manageable tasks, figuring out exactly what they need to accomplish each day. Setting goals is still very important to me today.
- Time Management: They prioritize their time effectively, balancing urgent tasks with important long-term projects so they can see immediate results as well as future growth. I am constantly working on getting better at managing my time. Deciding what is time well spent and time wasted is an ongoing journey for me.
- Consistency: They show up every day, work hard, and refine their methods. If your efforts are inconsistent, you’re not going to get where you want to go.
- Resilience: When things don’t work out the first time, they bounce back with renewed determination. Instead of giving up, they analyze what went wrong, adjust their strategies, and continue moving forward.
Success is determined by discipline and perseverance. I believe with all my heart that if we are disciplined and we don’t give up and we create an unstoppable work ethic, there is literally nothing we can’t accomplish.
One of my biggest assets is my ability to help people believe in themselves to the point where they realize they can accomplish anything they decide to do.
Becoming disciplined is a journey; you won’t get there overnight. Here are a few strategies that can help you develop this essential trait:
- Create a Routine: Establish a daily schedule that prioritizes your most important tasks. In other words, make a to-do list every day.
- Minimize Distractions: Identify your biggest distractions and take proactive steps to reduce them. Spend time with people who have a similar positive outlook. As Jim Rohn says, “We are the average of the five people that we spend the most time with.”
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to commitments that do not align with your goals.
Discipline is not just a skill; it’s a lifestyle that paves the way for success. If you embrace discipline today, you will be on a faster track to achieving your dreams. That is why I can confidently tell you that disciplined workers get there faster.
We all have the God-given ability to become more disciplined. I would be thrilled to come to your workplace and help you build a positive work culture with an unstoppable mindset. Trust me, it works!
