August 2019 Newsletter Do you need to look back to move forward ?

Do you need to look back to move forward?

How would you personally answer the question at the beginning of this newsletter? Some people would say “No,” because they believe we should never look back, just concentrate on the future. However, my answer to this question is “YES, ABSOLUTELY!”

I believe we all need to keep moving forward, but to do that effectively we also need to look back and learn from the past. When you do this, you will find that you want to leave some things behind and hold onto others.

To begin the process, make an honest analysis of where you are in your life right now. Are you where you want to be, and have you moved forward in the last decade or the last year? Do you still have bad habits from the past that are keeping you from moving forward?

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney

As in all my newsletters, podcasts, and speeches, my recommendations in this newsletter are based on my own experiences. I look at my life as a series of chapters, some longer than others, some more challenging, and thank the good Lord most of them very rewarding. Even though I don’t believe in dwelling on the past, I do believe in being aware of it. Before I can start a new and better chapter, I need to look back at the previous one and figure out what to take with me and what to leave behind. I also need to look back so I can get a better perspective on how far I’ve come.

Here are some examples of things to let go of:

  • Meaningless involvements
  • Negative people and negative relationships
  • Bad work habits
  • A poor attitude
  • An unproductive lifestyle
  • Neglecting your physical health
  • Financial challenges

And here are some examples of things that are worth holding onto:

  • Quality relationships
  • Positive, encouraging, and inspiring people
  • People who empower you to be better
  • Excellent work habits to accomplish your goals
  • An unstoppable mindset and uncompromisingly positive attitude
  • Taking a “My body is a temple” approach in making lifestyle choices
  • A strong physical fitness discipline
  • Frugality to remove financial burdens

Finally, here are some reasons why it is healthy to look back at past chapters of your life before creating new ones:

  • Looking back can help you learn what you didn’t like about yourself, the way you conducted business, the way you managed people, your personal life, and so on.
  • Looking back can guide you to make different choices that will help you succeed in business and have a more fulfilling personal life.

“Letting go means to come to the realization that some people are a part of your history, but not a part of your destiny.” ― Steve Maraboli

If you are striving to be the best possible version of yourself, you need to know what to do differently in the future. Constant improvement is a daily goal we should all have.

As I said earlier, you can look back at the past for guidance on how to build a better future. Ask yourself what you need to change about your life to make it better now and in the future.

Life is not a dress rehearsal; this is the real deal, right now. Learn from your past mistakes so you can move forward and become the person you want to be.

When you do this, you can face the future with no regrets. Let me repeat that: you can have no regrets. You have the God-given ability to create a new chapter of your life right now, so what are you waiting for?

If not now, then when? And if not you, then who?

This has been such a gift to our agents when they need it the most. The fact that you come, you are so genuine and caring, you are so honest, you are not trying to sell anything and your passion to help each and every person believe in themselves and become the best they can be is HUGE! The timing is perfect for us all helping and caring about each other, so, thank YOU from the bottom of my heart for giving of yourself to help all of us!”

I enjoyed your seminar and its focus. I was on the fence whether or not to attend and decided why not? I could have sat through an all day session if there was one, usually I end up at the seminars that start with a focus and quickly go astray. I found with yours time flew by too fast and it was already time to go but I wasn’t ready to go.”
